Podgorica | Montenegro |
||
Podgorica became the capital of Montenegro in 1946, taking over that role from Cetinje. It is not just an administrative, economic, cultural and academic centre of the country, it is also a starting point for tourists travelling either to the tourist centres in the continental part of the country, or those on the coast. Podgorica is only 60km from Budva and about 70km from the important ski resorts such as Kolašin. From 1946 to 1992 it used to carry the name Titograd, named after Tito, the late President of former Yugoslavia. Largely destroyed during air-raids in World War 2, it is now a modern city with ever growing number of modern buildings and new blocks, along with those built during the communist era. There is a diverse nightlife with many cafés and restaurants. Places of interest: • The Petrović’s palace (now the Contemporary Art Centre), Kruševac Park. • The Podgorica City Museum, 4 Marka Miljanova Street • Stara Varoš (the Old Town) with Sahat Tower (clock tower) and Osmanagić and Doganj mosques, on the left bank of the river Ribnica • The “Millennium” Bridge, the new bridge on the river Morača, Ivana Crnojevića Boulevard • St George Church, at the foothill of Gorica • The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, George Washington Street • Dajbabe Monastery, 4km southwest of Podgorica, towards Petrovac and Virpazar • Duklja (Lat. Doclea), archeological remains of a 1st century Roman city upon which the modern city of Podgorica was built; 4km from Podgorica • Medun Fortress, 13km southeast of Podgorica towards Orahovo • Marko Miljanov Museum in Medun • Virpazar, a small town on the shores of Skadar Lake, close to Podgorica
