Olive Oil | Montenegro |
||
Since Montenegro is a part of the Mediterranean region, there is a tradition of preparing Mediterranean dishes. Although there are certain regional variations, Mediterranean food is characterized by great use of fresh fruits and vegetables, aromatic herbs and spices, red wine, and most importantly, olive oil. That is also the case in this Mediterranean country, where almost half a million olive trees are cultivated. The most fertile region is the one in vicinity of Bar and Ulcinj, towards the southernmost parts of the Adriatic and Montenegrin coast. About 80.000 olive trees grow in the wind-protected Valdanos cove, once the pirate’s main harbour, about 5 kilometers from Ulcinj. It was from this region that the olive oil, treated as a liquid gold, was exported to Venice, Rome, Kairo, Skopje... Today, the vicinity of Bar is the home to the Montenegrin coast’s oldest and most widely spread olive trees, including one of the oldest olive trees in the world, between 2000 and 2500 years old. There is a Maslinijada, a festival dedicated to olive, held in Old Town of Bar every year, during which most skilled growers present delicious and fragrant olive-based delicacies, prepared according to the recipes originating in the Rumija region and carried from generation to generation. It is at this event that you can find highest-quality olive oil produced by cold pressing. The best producers claim that the secret of making quality olive oil lies in the way they pick olives and the fact that they are pressed within 48 hours. Such oil is considered to be more than food, it’s a cure!
