According to many, Kotor is the most beautiful of the coastal cities of Montenegro. It is a World Cultural Heritage city and is one of the best preserved medieval cities of the Mediterranean region. It is surrounded by 4,5km long walls, and its architecture was predominantly influenced by the Venetians. Its rich history spans from the first written records dating back to the 2nd century BCE to World War 1. The city was under Byzantine rule for 700 years, followed by Serbian rule during which it developed into the most important port of the Kingdom of Serbia, after which it came under the rule of the Republic of Venice, followed by shorter periods of Austro-Hungarian, Italian and French rule. This city-museum is well known for its narrow little streets with many shops, cafés and restaurants. It is 8km from Tivat airport and 90km from Podgorica airport. Popular local events are the Kotor Summer Carnival and Bokeljska noć (Boka Night) in August.
