Herceg Novi is a city at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. It is recognizable for its numerous stone staircases and lush Mediterranean vegetation, with many exotic plant species decorating the city’s walls and fortresses, including mimosas, eucalyptus, agavas, magnolias and dozens of others. The walls and the Forte Mare, Spanish and Kanli fortresses testify to the history of this city, whose origins date back to the end of the 14th century. The city was under the Turkish, Spanish, Venetian and Austro-Hungarian influence. It has beautiful beaches and there is a small spa town of Igalo in its immediate vicinity, where you can apply mud with healing properties. Herceg Novi is 112km from the Podgorica airport, 23km from the Tivat airport (by ferry) and only 50km from Dubrovnik, Croatia. Each February there is a Mimosa Festival, during which mimosa’s pleasant aroma spreads across the city. This festival is a member of the Foundation of European Carnival Cities (FECC). Places of interest: • Forte Mare fortress, in the lower city above the walking street • Španjola Fortress, northwestern part of the city, on the Bajer hill • Kanli Kula fortress • Sahat tower (clock tower) • St Hieronymus Church, Old Town, Miće Pavlovića Square • St Michael the Archangel Church, Old Town, Hercega Stjepana Square • Savina Monastery, 2km east of the city
