Cetinje is Montenegro’s historic centre and, due to its legacy as a former royal capital of Montenegro, its honorary capital. Make sure to visit the presidential palace, since Cetinje is the location of the State President’s official residence. Thanks to its rich historical legacy, it is often referred to as a “city-museum.” This is the place where you can experience the authentic spirit of the Montenegrin identity, not only in its museums which contain numerous testimonies of Montenegro’s rich past, but also in its architecture which reflects the progress of a free nation at the end of the 19th century (we must single out the buildings of the French, Russian, English, Austro-Hungarian and Italian consulates). Cetinje is located right next to the Lovćen National Park and lies on the Podgorica-Cetinje-Budva route. Situated between Podgorica and Budva, it takes about a 40-minute drive to reach either destination.
