About Montenegro Dining

On the crossroads of the East and the West, Montenegro has been under different influences throughout its history, much like the other Balkan countries. Montenegrin cuisine thus has a presence of Italian and Turkish flavours, i.e. of the Mediterranean and Oriental cuisines. Nowadays, mostly due to its specific geographic characteristics, it represents a synthesis of Mediterranean dishes on one hand, and delicacies typically found in the mountainous continental region on the other.

Mediterranean dishes are predominant along the coast, with fresh fish and sea food prepared on homemade olive oil, with chard and fresh salad as usual side dishes. You will be pleasantly surprised by the freshness of all the ingredients, often organically produced, as well as by the skill of Montenegrin chefs.

As you visit some of the national parks in the continental part of Montenegro, make sure you do not miss to try fresh cheeses and meat products, traditionally smoked by a special kind of wood. The most famous type of smoked meat, the so-called pršuta, can be found in the
Njeguši village, on the slopes of the Lovćen mountain. Of the traditional delicacies found in the mountainous region, we recommend kačamak (made of potato purée, corn flour and kajmak, a type of dairy dish), cicvara (a kind of porridge similar to kačamak, made without potato), roast lamb and potatoes baked under sače - a clay lid covered with embers.The most popular Montenegrin wines are Vranac (red wine) and Krstač (white wine). They are a perfect match to the national cuisine, as is typically the case in all Mediterranean countries.

Thanks to its unique geographic characteristics, only one or two hours drive you can travel from the sunny seaside to the mountains at the altitude of almost 2000 metres. Contrasting flavours of the Montenegrin cuisine can be likened to the feeling one gets when standing at the top of Lovćen, enjoying the view of the blue sea on side and the expanse of the rocky mountains on the other. It is a unique gastronomic experience you will keep coming back to.
